This April Swarsangya Charitable Trust team visited the premises of Shri Govind Dholakia (Govind Kaka of Surat) Founder and Owner of Shree Ram Krishna Diamond where Satsang is organised regularly. Here to listen to the satsang our elder members of city (senior citizens) are there and we all know hearing difficulties prevail in this age group the most. Our team did hearing screening by PTA, impedance Audiometery, otoscopy of about 40 elderly and 80% of them were suffering of hearing difficulty and are in need of hearing aids. They visit satsang to enjoy their second inning of life by listening to peaceful satsang but the difficulty in hearing hinder the same. 

We would appreciate if people would like to donate inorder to bring melody of sound in the life of elderly of our society to bring happiness in their life 

We organized a free Hearing screening camp for pilot and ground staff of a private charter plane company in the month of September 2021. Since their work place is too noisy the risk of developing noise induced hearing loss is certainly more but we were surprised that audiogram of all of them was normal. Incidence of Noise induced hearing loss in them was nil. This was because the ground staff uses ear plug at the during take off and landing of planes while the duty schedule of pilot is such that they get proper rest hours. We were happy to note that though they were unaware of hearing screening but then also they practice health habits for their hearing health. 

Neonates the new born baby whose way of expressing problem is just the cry. When the age of baby is three month then he or she starts to recognize their parent’s voice and by the time they turn six month of age they turn their eyes and head towards new sound. Due to lack of awareness some parents do not discover that their baby have difficulty in hearing. They realize that their baby is not hearing when their baby do not start speaking even at the age of one year or more. Even after they do not go for treatment they think that their child will start speaking after some time. This ignorance and lack of awareness is one of the reasons of increase in the rate of hearing loss in children’s.

Cause of hearing loss in baby before birth may be hereditary (hearing loss history in family) or due to intrauterine infection such as rubella and cytomegalovirus infection. The cause of hearing loss after birth may be due to birth apraxia means lack of oxygen at the time of birth, hyperbilirubinemia which means baby suffers severe jaundice after birth, birth weight of the baby is low etc.

Since hearing loss is a critical medical issue and if discovered timely could be rehabilitated if possible but the delay deprives the child from hearing and thus speech. Neonatal hearing screening is a mandatory test that must be practiced at all the maternity hospitals so as to reduce the raising rate of neonatal hearing loss.

With an aim to reduce the rate of neonatal hearing loss we are frequently organizing neonatal hearing screening camp and spreading awareness through different social media platforms in the society. Till now we have screened more than 900 neonates of Surat. Case of hearing loss among these was 4.4%, this is matter of concern. Surat is a richly populated metropolitan city of India and the number we have screened is too low. But we are continuously working to spread awareness so that all the new-born baby of SURAT is screened for hearing before leaving the hospital.

Training Program for Parents of Hearing and Speech disabled Childrens.

Hearing aid after fitting care skill is must for parents to assure proper speech development of child.

We provided training to parents regarding the uses and maintenance of hearing aid for its proper functioning and made them learn how to help their child in developing proper speech by their involvement in the speech therapy of the child during therapy sessions with speech therapist and its post practice at home with family members to mainstream their child sooner.

Dial 100 is an Emergency Police Patrolling Service that demands to work under noise of traffic, telephonic call and the siren of patrolling vehicle. working in noise may obstruct hearing ability thus this workers needs to be aware about hearing health and must visit for hearing screening at regular interval to enjoy healthy hearing lifelong. 

Results of hearing screening depicted conductive loss in 4%, SNHL in 26%, NIHL in 20% of the patrolling staff we screened for hearing. thus we can say that there is risk of developing hearing loss in future thus care to hear is must.

Surat is a metropolitan city of India and thus the traffic load in Surat is very much. Traffic police encounter varied levels of noise during their duty hour at regular basis. Their work place just revolve arround the noisy environment. Continuous exposure to noise for hours may hinders their hearing  ability. 

Thus we organized hearing screening camp for them from October 2021 to March 2022. We did otoscopy, Pure Tone Audiometery of all the traffic police who visited the camp. About 30% of them were suffering from noise induced hearing loss.

We made them aware for regular hearing screening and adviced them how to care their hearing health while working in noisy environment.

We organised drawing competition on Noise pollution on the Occassion of Children's Day 2022  at CANOPUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, SURAT.

About 650 children's represented their creativity with colours.
